Honoring Judith S. Kaye: A Legacy of Justice and Education

Judith S. Kaye was a trailblazer, becoming the first woman appointed to the New York Court of Appeals and serving as its Chief Judge. Renowned for her visionary leadership, reformed New York’s jury system and established specialized courts that addressed issues like drug addiction, domestic violence, and mental health Judge Kaye was particularly passionate about helping young people stay engaged in, advocating tirelessly to keep them out of the courtroom.

To honor her impactful legacy, The Judith. Kaye High School (JSK) opened its doors in September 2017. Located in Manhattan and co-located with the School of Cooperative Technical (Co-Op Tech), JSK provides innovative services and tailored support to empower each to succeed.

Principal's Message

Dear JSK Family,

There’s nothing special about success without a hill to climb. You are special, and your success makes us all stronger. We look forward to seeing you build further and, in turn, helping you build those around you into brighter, more positive, and more impactful contributors to our communities.

It was the great Muhammad Ali who said, “It isn’t the mountains ahead that wear you out, but it’s the pebble in your shoe.” Know that in this life, the work that we put into ourselves and those around us is a slow and careful process. Sometimes it can feel like change is impossible, and our goals are far out of reach. Slow motion is better than no motion, and if we continue to believe in ourselves, everything is possible. During this marathon, we have to be conscious of what the pebbles in our shoes might be. What are the small things that, over time, detract from our end goals and growth? Are we late for school or work, do we not put in all the effort we are capable of, do we have a dependence on chemicals or a poor diet? I urge you to take every day to evaluate the little things that can slowly build into major obstacles. Your toughest critic should be yourself.

You are valuable and capable. You are smart and strong. Take each day to improve on the little things so that the mountains aren’t so steep and the road isn’t so rocky. We believe in you and always will, but it’s most important that you always believe in yourself.
